Grudge Match of the Century

World Series of Poker

World Series of Poker Main Event

A Vegas Miracle - how I won $129,000 in my 3rd tournament ever

This is how I won $129,000 in my 3rd ever poker tournament. Note: don't try this, it probably won't turn out well for you.
I spent about 6 months grinding up a $5,000 bankroll playing home/casino games ranging from .5/1 to 1/3. The week that I hit that $5,000 mark, Matt, one of my best friends from college informed me that his job had placed him in Las Vegas for the next month and that I could crash with him for a few nights if I wanted to come on out west. I had frequent flyer miles for the flight and some Mlife/Fremont hotel comps for the rest of the trip. My grand total for flight and lodging for 10 days came to $200.
Now, I’m not going to bore you guys with low-level cash hand histories. The next 10 days were filled with me playing lowstakes poker for 10-12 hours a day. It’s as fun as it sounds – it’s not. I was having a good time in Vegas otherwise – but towards the end of the trip I had a realization: 1/2’s the same everywhere. I didn’t have to fly out to the desert to raise to $7 preflop.
After 10 days, my grand total from poker (and a fair amount of dumb degenerate shit on Fremont) was -$186. That wasn’t what I came out to do — I knew that I was a better player than my recent results had indicated. The morning of my return flight, I decided I was going to play tournaments until I either busted my $5,000 bankroll or hit something worthwhile.
I impulsively decided to not get on my plane at 11:30am. Checkout time from Luxor was at 11:00 – and I didn’t know where I was going yet. I had 30 minutes to pack up my stuff and figure out where I was going before they’d charge me a fee. I sorted TripAdvisor by cheapest first – I’ve stayed in crappy hostels/motels before and overall am a very low maintenance person. I figured that by staying somewhere for $20 a night, I’d be able to maximize the amount of shots I could take before flying back home. I accepted that there was a real chance I’d go back broke – but I didn’t really care. If I didn’t take my shot now, then when?
I booked the cheapest bed in Vegas - a 6-person shared hostel just past the Stratosphere. Let's just say you get what you pay for — it was not a happy place. A fair amount of the people in there were bordering on homelessness and there was barbed wire surrounding their outdoor gym. In addition to this, I had the constant stress of knowing that all that separated my bankroll from the rest of my roommates was a tiny lock. I took the Deuce to the strip, lived off food comps, and turned down invites from my friends to hang out. I was in town to play poker, nothing else.
Disclaimer: I had never played tournaments prior to heading out to Vegas. My only knowledge of hand ranges was from watching televised events. I downloaded a free Nash chart app on my phone while on the Deuce to the strip and studied it for 5 minutes – whatever, I get the jist of it. Let’s play some cards.
The first day of doing this I played the $140 daily at the Aria. Top 13 spots paid -- I finished in 15th. It was depressing to say the least — I felt as if I was at rock bottom. Before the first night of sleeping at the hostel I called the airline to see if I could get on the flight that I had deliberately missed the day prior. I couldn't.
I made it my goal to at least cash something so that I could get a decent hotel room.
I couldn’t have slept more than 2-3 hours the first night there. One of my roommates was loudly vomiting all night, the sheets itched, and I was going through an existential crisis... like dude, you’ve got a finance degree and you’re really doing this shit?
While on the bus to the strip, I opened Poker Atlas and saw that there was a $200 satellite to win a seat into the $1,600 Venetian main event. I decided that I was going to go take a shot at that.
I was at risk twice in the satellite but after studying the GTO method on how to win coinflips, I persevered and won a seat to the main.
The first day was surreal – once again, I was running on minimal sleep due to my housing arrangements, but I remember the following hands from day 1:
  1. Button opens to 2.2x, I’m in the BB with Q9cc. SB folds, we go HU to a flop of 832c. He c-bets, I call. Turn 4x, x/x. River Ax. I check, he bets, I x/r to like 3x his bet, he insta folds. I take it down and show air.
  2. UTG+1 opens, MP calls, I flat on the button with K10ss. 3 ways to a flop of Qs43xx. UTG+1 bets 40% pot, MP calls, I call. Turn is the Js. UTG+1 bets 60% pot, MP calls, I flat. River comes the 8s. UTG+1 snap bets 80%. MP flats, I flat. I announce king high flush, they both muck.
  3. Folds to the SB, he limps, I look down at Q10o, and check. Flop comes KQ6r. He leads 35%, I call. Turn 10. He bets, I call. River comes a J. He bets, I tank for about 45 seconds then flick in a call, he shows 76o… ship it.
The average stack after day 1 was around 40k, I bagged like 65k. I walked back to the Deuce stop outside of the Venetian and headed on my 30 minute ride back home. I kept thinking to myself, someone’s gotta win this thing, why not me?
I had to get in the money for this tournament to be able to get the fuck out of there. A min cash here was over $3k – that was more than enough for me to get a suite on Fremont for a few nights and party for a bit, then get home with my head held high.
Day 2: I get up at 7am after already being completely awake for the past 4 hours. There’s no way I slept more than 3 hours last night. I hit the Denny’s by the Stratosphere then get on the Deuce.
I get to the Venetian and feel like I’m about to fall asleep. I go to the self-serve coffee/tea dispenser in the middle of the room and make myself an iced coffee. I get to my table, and the cocktail waitress comes around. I ask for another iced coffee and toss her a fiver.
Here are some highlights from the 1st half of day 2:
  1. I open 97ss on the button, BB flats. Flop comes AK3s. BB checks, I bet 35%. He throws out a 5k chip – which I interpret as a x/r to my bet. I groan, make a joke about it being the first hand of the day, and start to muck. The dealer stops my cards midway before hitting the muck, and informs me that he didn’t raise, that he called my flop bet. Everyone laughs, I go silent and wait for him to make change. Turn is the 2s. He thinks for a second and bets 30%. I tank for like 30 seconds, then flat. River is a blank. He thinks for a second, then checks. I bet like 30% pot. He tells me that I’m an angle shooter and mucks. I tell him I’m not an angle shooter and show my 9 high. Everyone laughs, we get on with playing.
  2. CO opens, I 3b 87dd in the SB to 4x, he flats. Flop comes 1032d. I check, he checks. Turn is the 6d. I bet 55% pot, he flats. River comes the Kd. I bet 60%, he tanks, tells me he thinks I backdoored diamonds, then folds. Damn, these players are pretty good.
  3. I open KK UTG to 2.5x, UTG +1 flats. Heads up to a flop of K43r. x/x. Turn 8, I bet 40% pot, he calls. River 3, I bet 80% pot, he tanks, then calls with AK.
I bring my 3 racks of chips to the new table and immediately get some comments – whatever, I’m just on a heater, it happens. At this point, my body was giving out. I was trying my hardest not to fall asleep in between every hand.
Cutoff opens, I’m in the SB, I look down at KK. I put in the 3b, folds back to him. He puts in a healthy 4. We’re the two big stacks at the table – I’d guess he was 50bb effective while I was around 65bb. God damn, am I good enough to fold kings here? No, I’m not. I shove, he snaps, I know that I’ve just fucked up my tournament. He shows the aces. The dealer puts a king in the window, and I hold. I’m for sure the chip leader now.
I lose a few 40/60 and 60/40 flips and chip down a bit. I still have a very healthy stack, probably around 80bb.
The next 3 hands are from the second half of day 2:
  1. Aggro Asian guy on the button. Folds to him, he opens to 2.2x, SB folds, I look down at 43ss and raise to 7.5x, he flats.
Flop comes 894cc. I check, he bets, I call. Turn’s another 9. I check, he bets 75% pot, I call. River’s the 10c. I check, he bets 1.2x pot. I ask the dealer for a count of the bet – meanwhile, villain looks like he’s going to shit himself. I flick in a chip, he throws down KcQx. I laugh a little, show my 43ss, and obnoxiously say ship it.
  1. I open KQo UTG+1, MP 3bets me. I figure that a 4b from UTG+1 could take it down a fair amount of the time, so I decide to go for it. He thinks for a second and flats.
Flop comes AK4r. I check, he checks back. Turn is a 6, goes x/x again. River’s another brick. I put in a 30% value bet. He does a little grimace and tanks for like 20 seconds. It looks like he’s going to fold so I start verbally telling him that his queens are good. The dealer informs me that you’re not allowed to talk about your hand to another player. I inform him that I’m not talking about my hand, I’m talking about villains’ hand. Dealer laughs and lets me continue to antagonize villain. MP starts talking back, asking if I’m really bluffing. I inform him that once he folds, I’ll show the bluff. He ends up calling, I snap show, he pays me then gets up from the table to go for a walk.
  1. We’re playing 6 handed. UTG opens, MP flats, I flat TT on the button. 3 ways to a flop of AT9ccc. UTG bets 50% pot, MP folds, I put in a medium sized raise. He thinks about it and flats.
The turn is the Kd. He pauses for a second then checks. I figured AxKc was his most likely combo. I didn’t think he could fold AxKc to any sizing – I decide to overbet jam 2x pot. He tanks for like 5 min and eventually lets it go. He tells me later he folded AxKc. Nice fold sir.
I finished day two 2nd in chips out of the 64 players remaining. More importantly, I was in the money. My friend Matt offered to give me a ride to the hostel to grab my stuff.
On the way to the hostel I’m telling Matt how trash the place is and he’s kind of like yeah man, whatever, it can’t be that bad. We gather my belongings and head on out. Matt remarked to me that the hostel reminded him of jail mixed with a summer camp.
I open a same night hotel app and see a room at the Four Queens available for $110. The lady at check in was nice enough – however, she informed me that the only room they had available at my price point was a smoking room overlooking the Fremont St. experience. I paid the $20 to upgrade to a non-smoking in the quiet part of the hotel. Vegas man, I swear.
It’s like 2am at this point -- I get to my room, sit on the bed and close my eyes. I open them and it’s 11:00am. Ah fuck man, I gotta get to the Venetian. I hop in the shower, brush my teeth, and freshen up. Even if I don’t have clean clothes, whatever, I’m second in the main, who cares.
Some interesting hands from the first part of Day 3:
  1. I had two inexcusable punts in this tournament. This is the first one: I open 5h5c from LP, BB calls. Flop comes J62hhh. x/x. Turn is a 4x. x, I bet 50% pot, BB jams 15bb. I called – and immediately realized I fucked up, big time. He had 2 big chips in his stack that I didn’t see, making his shove effectively like 25bb. In addition, I didn’t have the 5h, I had the 5d. I really didn’t ask for a count or double check my hole cards. Villain turns over 64o and holds. In my defense, I literally didn’t know what ICM meant at the time. Whoops.
  2. Someone who I recognize from poker TV jams 22bb UTG. I’m in the CO with JJ, I ask him how much it is, he’s talkative and seems genuinely comfortable/down for me to call. I fold – I run into him a few days later at the Aria, he tells me he had AA there. I believe him.
  3. CO opens, button instantly jams 30bb effective. I’m in the SB with TT and 25bb – live reads, we’re flipping. I call for all in my effective stack, CO folds, button has AQ. I hold. He’s not happy I called with tens. Oh well, sorry bro, gg.
  4. MP opens, CO 3 bets to 7bb, button jams 20bb. I look down at 2 black aces in the big blind. I reshove, MP folds, CO calls off his 20bb stack. I’m up against AQ and QQ. I hold.
Even with my atrocious punt earlier in the day, I’m the chip leader again.
We’re down to about 15 left in the field. UTG opens, I 3b AKo on the button, he jams 20bb, I call. He has 99, a king comes on the flop and he’s gone.
It’s day 3 of the main and we’re playing 5 handed with 12 people left. Let’s fucking go.
  1. Button opens to 2.5x, I’m in the BB with A8dd, I flat. Flop comes A104r, I check, he bets, I call. Turn is a 7, x/x. River A, I bet 1.2x pot. He tanks, calls, I show, I’m good.
  2. CO opens to 2.5x, I’m in the BB with 108dd, I flat. Flop comes Kd4x2d, it goes x/x. Turn is a Kx, I check, he bets 60% pot, I flat. River is the 4d. I check, he bets pot. I tank and let it go. He tells me later he checked back a weak king on the flop.
  3. SB completes, I’m in the BB with J9o and I check my option. Flop comes Q108r. The SB donks out into me for 60% pot. I flat. Turn comes a brick and he leads into me for 60% again. I raise to 3.5x his turn bet, he thinks for a while then flats. River is another brick. He bets 80% pot into me. I tank for a while, then shove. He starts laughing and folds QQ face up.
Less than a week ago I was grinding buffet comps at Planet Hollywood. Now I have guys correctly folding top set to me.
I’ve made it to the final table. I pick up a few small pots and the two shortstacks at the table get eliminated in quick succession.
This is without a doubt the most pointless and just plain out stupid punt of my entire life: I open J2dd on the button into a ~18bb SB and a GTO robot with mid 7 figures in career earnings in the BB. Don’t do this, this is quite literally lighting money on fire. SB folds, BB flats. Flop comes Kh8h3d. I cbet, BB calls. Turn is the Kd, goes x/x.
River comes a 7h, he leads into me for half pot. Whatever, I’m going for it – I put in a raise. He thinks for all of 5 seconds then calls me with KQh. Wow, I just punted away $50,000 in ICM. Jesus Christ dude, what the fuck.
For the next orbit or two, I’m clearly pissed at myself. I get up after my button and do a lap around the poker room – I’m good. The monkey tilt is gone, and I’m ready to get back to playing normal ranges.
Anyway, nothing else really happens for a while – I look down at AKo UTG and raise it up. Folds around to the BB, he thinks for a while, then jams for about 20bb. I snap, he has AQo. I hold. I’m now second in chips. We go on a 10-minute break.
When I get back to the table, the prospect of a 5-way chop comes up. We’re all tired – and the pay jumps are very significant. If you couldn’t tell from this story, I’m a degenerate, but in this spot, I’m willing to reduce variance a bit. We run the numbers and come to an agreement – we all agree to take a very slight ICM bump to give 1st place a bit more money than his stack is worth.
I just won $129,000 -- huh? This was my second tournament cash – not too bad considering that it was my third tournament ever. Maybe I should start learning how to play MTT’s now.
I take $124,000 in a check and $5,000 in cash. I’m leaving Vegas in 4 days and don’t plan on coming home with any of the cash.
The winner of the tournament’s a pretty cool guy and he asks if I want to crash in his guest room tonight… like yeah, if that’s a real offer, I’m down. I pick up my toiletry bag from the Venetian concierge and we hit the Uber.
The next morning Matt picks me up at his house – I hit the Chase bank and deposit the $124,000. I take Matt and my other friend, Spencer out to the Sterling Brunch over at Bally’s – the entire time, Spencer just kept repeating “Davis, what the fuck”. I don’t know dude, seriously, what the fuck.
I get a suite at the D downtown that night and (very) long story short I end up hitting $100 on a number at roulette at 5am. It’s time for bed.
Here’s a link to my Hendon Mob, verifying my tournament result. Hopefully I see some of you guys at the WSOP in 2021.

What tournaments you looking forward to in 2021?

On the 1st of January 2020 I final tabled a local casino tourney, and made a vow that I was going to focus more on live poker this year, and try to travel to play on the UK circuit when work/life allowed.
Clearly, that plan is in flames with all live poker KO'd for the forseeable future, especially the multi day events I wanted to attend.
With that in mind I wondered if anyone wanted to share the tournaments they're looking forward to when the current global crisis chills the fuck out?
Here's mine: GUKPT Edinburgh - was due to be the next tournament I played in, so that's definitely on the list.
Battle of Malta - Had a few people rave to me about how great this event is, beautiful surroundings, great hospitality, big programme of events with a range of buy-ins. Hot, but not Aussie Millions hot.
Kings of Tallinn: €550 buy in, and the chance to say I'm off to Estonia this weekend to become the King of Tallinn. Estonia looks really nice too and pints are just £1.50 ($1.80) +life EV.
WSOP - Never been, not even slightly interested in the main event glory but would love to take a shot at the $1500 HORSE and the huge field events, try and bink a huge score from a relatively small outlay.
Where are you folks headed?

Tournament Review #2: Seminole Hard Rock June Big Stack Special $100,000 Guaranteed (Background + Hand Reviews Included).

Tournament Review #2: Seminole Hard Rock June Big Stack Special $100,000 Guaranteed (Background + Hand Reviews Included).
Hello everyone, I'd like to add some content to the poker community in the written form on an ongoing basis. I'm not a Vlogger and have no idea how Brad Owen, Doug Polk, or Dnegs do their videos with background music, graphics, and such (however, I am a huge fan of all of them), so for me, the best way to share content is in the written form with potentially a couple of pictures sprinkled within. Please let me know how I can improve my posts (and my game, lol!) for the future, and I hope you enjoy the read!
This tournament review will essentially be my second one, as I sort of reviewed the Seminole Hard Rock Deep Stack Series Event #1 last month.
Background / Details:
Seemingly, every poker player and their mother is out in Las Vegas for the WSOP and having a great time. However, the "working man" like myself can't make it out there this year - fortunately, living in West Palm Beach, FL provides me the opportunity to compete in many well-structured and large-fielded tournaments throughout the year. For example, the Seminole Hard Rock series runs four times a year, whose Main Events have become legitimate "stops" in the professional poker circuit.
However, I'll have to wait until August to review one of those tournaments. Today's tournament review covers the Seminole Hard Rock June Big Stack Special.
Buy-in / Structure:
This NLHE tournament is a two-day, multi-flight event with a buy-in of $130. There are unlimited re-entries up until the start of Level 9. Players start with 15,000 in chips with blinds at 100/100 (Structure Sheet). Day 1 ends at Level 14 and the Day 2 restart is on Sunday.
There are 7 starting flight total - I played in Flight E.
Pre-Tournament:
I drop off my kids at Summer Camp and head down the Florida Turnpike. I'm a hard rock / heavy metal kind of guy, so today's playlist is all Metallica. The very first song that comes on via shuffle is "Master of Puppets" - that's got to be a good sign of things to come, right?
I arrive at the SHR and for those of you whom have played at the property before, I predict that you'll have a hard time recognizing it after the guitar-shaped hotel is 100% built. The property is being completely revamped, inside and out. Even the Hard Rock Store is now relegated to a temporary, uncomfortable corner of the hotel as this massive construction project continues. Nevertheless, everyone is very excited about the project, and I for one can't wait to see the end of the rebuilding phase of one of my favorite properties for playing poker.
When I get to an event early, I like to play a little cash, to further put me in a poker-like mindset and, hey, who knows, you can get lucky and hit a high hand or double-up. There aren't many tables running at this time as it's early, so I get seated at a $1/$2 NL table and buy-in for $300. There's only one hand in 90 minutes that's worth mentioning:
I have about $275 and I pick up two red Aces in UTG+2 and raise to $15 (there was a $5 Straddle on the button). The SB calls and has roughly $100 behind, and we're heads up to the flop. The flop comes A23, with two spades. I continue for $25 and he again calls. The turn is the 8s, and see that he has a little over $50 left that he's playing with in his hands. I put him all-in and he snap calls with Ks9s for a turned flush. The river bricks out for me, and he wins a nice pot. I take it on the chin, as this is about the fourth or fifth cash game session where I lose 1/2 a buy-in and then work the whole session to either even up or at least not go broke (I will detail this in another post sometime in the future).
It's now 20 minutes before the start of Day 1E, so I pick up my chips and cash out for about $200, which is salvageable. I buy-in for the tournament, and after taking a break, I make my way over to table 35, seat 3.
Levels 1 and 2:
The tournament starts and in seat 6 is a familiar face that I've played with a few times before. He's an older gentleman who is very friendly and has run hot in a few tournaments that I've also competed in. He immediately says hello to me, and we chat it up a little bit. I then begin to recall some hands that we played together and wonder if we'll get involved in some crazy situation at some point today (Spoiler Alert: It happens).
Only one hand of particular interest to report: In Level 2, blinds are 100/100/100 (That's the Small Blind, Big Blind, and the Big Blind Ante), and I'm in the SB with T8o. I check, and there are 4 of us to the flop. The flop comes J96 rainbow, and I decide to lead out for 300. I get called in two spots, and the pot is now ~1,300. The turn brings the Ks, so I have a double gut-shot straight draw. I bet again, this time I believe I bet 1,100, hoping to just take the pot down right here without having to sweat out a river card, and in the hopes that this board really connects with a hand that a player in the Small Blind (namely, myself) could have. I get called by the player in the CO, and there's now ~3,500 in the pot. The river is a big giant brick for me, but I continue with my story that this flop hit me and that I did fill my straight. I bet 2,800, and the CO immediately calls with QJo, but tells me "very nice bet". It's a small consolation, but does put the table on notice that I am not weak/tight and am willing to put my opponents to the test. Honestly, at this point, I am already thinking about firing bullet #2 as I'm down to about ~8,000 from my starting stack of 15,000.
Levels 3 and 4:
This is where the tournament really gets interesting for me. Remember the older, nicer gentleman that I said hello to earlier? Well, we're about to have one hell of a hour in these next two levels. The blinds are now 100/200/200, and my elderly friend raises to 500. The HJ and D both call, and I look down at Ah5d. I consider a 3-bet for a split second, but the table has been very loose/passive and I can't recall a 3-bet before the flop as of yet. So I pay the extra 400 chips and make the call, as does the BB. There are 5 players to the flop with 2,500 in the pot. The flop comes 2h3h3d. I really like this flop, but check to see what my friend will do. The BB checks and my friend bets something in the neighborhood of 1,200. Action folds around to me and I consider my options. Folding here is not an option for me for a couple of reasons. For one, it's very early in the tournament and if I do bust, I can go re-buy and start fresh (and at a $130 buy-in, it's not a big deal). Second, even though I'm most likely behind, I have a a backdoor flush draw and any 4 will do just fine for a wheel. After 20-30 seconds of deliberation, I move all in for ~6,500 more. I get snap-called by my friend whose name I should really know by now. He flips over KK. I say "That's a nice hand", and the dealer whose name is Brittney starts to burn & turn. The turn card is a 5d, to which I say "That's not that bad", or something to that effect. The river is the magical, miracle, improbable 4c, giving me the straight and boosting my short stack back up to ~18,000. The older gentleman and I laugh a bit about it, and we move on.
During Level 4 now, I win a few small hands and then, with about 15 minutes left to go in the level, I start to run super red hot. All of the following action happens within the last 15 minutes of Level 4, where blinds are 200/300/300:
i. I pick up 66 in mid-position and make it 700 to go. I get two callers and the flop comes K65, with two diamonds. A player (I think the BB in this hand) makes it 2,500. A bit scared of the flush and to protect my hand, I raise to 6,500. I showed a very small bluff to the table a few hands ago where I had complete air, but bet into 2 players on the button, so I am convinced this player in the BB is thinking about making a move. He ultimately sigh-folds, and I show my hand to the table.
ii. On the very next hand, I pick up KK. I raise again to 700. My friendly nemesis whom I doubled-up through calls, and it's heads up to the flop, which is 7-high with two hearts. I bet 1,200, he snap calls. The turn is an 8h, so we're looking at a super-connected board with three hearts now. I bet again to 2,200, and he instantly raises it up to ~8,000. Even though I have a big over-pair, this player knows what he's doing and would not be raising light in many spots. There is so much that can beat me, and I had just ran up my stack to a decent level again. I start to count my remaining chips behind after my 2,200 turn bet and I have about 22,000. I tell him "I just feel like this hand [as I show the table] is not good here", and muck it. My friend says "whoa!" and says "that's a really good fold - we were about 50/50 going to the river!". He didn't tell me exactly what I had, but by his statement he must have had 15+ outs (any heart, any straight-card, and possibly whatever lower-paired card he was also holding for 3 additional outs). We start discussing the hand and chat back and forth a bit about probabilities and if he could have made that lay down, when all of a sudden....
iii. ... I look down at 7c7s UTG. I again raise to 700, the player immediately to my left calls (he has a stack around 18k-20k). The CO calls and both the SB and BB complete, so we're five ways to the flop. To my amazement, the flop comes T97 with two diamonds, so I flopped bottom set and am loving life. The SB and BB both check and I decide to get cute and set the trap, with a plan of check-raising anyone who dared throw any chips in the middle of the table. That's exactly what winds up happening - the player to my immediate left throws out a bet of ~3,000. Action folds to me and I get a feeling that I may not want to play coy for too much longer, as the table, like I mention previously, has been very limpy and "call-ey". I look at the player, look at his remaining chips, and I move all-in. I can sense that the table is getting annoyed with my constant aggression, so all eyes are now on me and the player to my left. He asks me "Show if I fold?", to which I don't respond. He tanks for over a minute and finally grabs his stack, picks it up off the felt with one hand and drops it forward. I flip over my bottom set and he shows JJ. The board run-out is clean and honestly I don't even know what my chip count is, but I eliminated the player and I think I'm around 40,000. The dealer begins to shuffle the deck and the tournament clock is almost at zero for the first 15-minute break of the day. Players start to get up and fold and I'm in the BB on the next hand...
iv. ...My older friend makes it 800 from UTG+2, and action folds all the way back around to me in the BB and I look down at KsJs. I make the call and we're heads up to the flop. The dealer tells other players that if they're not in the hand, to please leave for the break, so there's a lot of commotion and movement around me, but I'm in a hand so none of this matters to me. The flop comes T95 - ALL SPADES. My eyes must have been as big as watermelons popping out of my skull at this point. I check and my buddy in seat 6 leads out for 3,500. He started the hand with around 30,000, and for some reason I'm thinking I'm drawing to one out, the Qs, because I somehow convince myself that he's had enough of me and has AsXs for the Ace-high flush. I think about it for a little while and I call. The turn is some brick and I ask him how many of the grey & yellow 5,000 chips he has behind. He sort of mumbles something unclear, and I don't know what possessed me to do this but I say "OK - I'm all in". I think I was running so hot and I was still all jazzed up about the previous hand that I just let it rip. He exclaims "Are you serious?!?!?", and makes the call. He flips over pocket 5's for a flopped set, and I turn over my hand to reveal my flopped King-high flush. He says "pair the board", and I say "no, please don't pair the board". The dealer burns and flips over a 8, which doesn't pair the board, winning me a monster pot and busting my older friend from the tournament. We get up, shake hands and shake our heads at my crazy run and wild turn of events. We kind of just stand there for a minute chatting about the last 10-15 minutes - he reveals to me that he saw me running so well that he thought there was no way I could have had it every time, otherwise he might have folded his bottom set.
I then sit back down and take a minute to get organized and count my chips. I took a picture of my stack, shown below - the count after level 4 was 78,200, with blinds in Level 5 going up to 200/400/400. In other words, 195 Big Blinds!
78,200 (195BB) after a wild Level 4.
Levels 5 through 8:
My remaining table-mates are shocked to find out I've busted another player during the break, and I'm obviously having a great time with the table talk. In the second hand of Level 5, I pick up TT from late position and raise to 1,200. The player on the button shoves for ~10k, and action folds back around to me. I call, and he flips over AJo. The board runs out without an Ace or a Jack, so I bust yet another player and run the stack up to nearly 90,000. The players are bursting out in laughter as this is a pretty insane run.
However, as many of you know, there can be large swings in poker, specifically in tournament poker and even more specifically at the lower buy-in tournaments like this one. So this moment winds up being the high point of the event for me, even though at the time I wasn't thinking about anything else other than the fucking Mirage (bad Rounders reference there) :)
Other than one spot where I called an all-in with my A4 vs. an AJ (the AJ held, so I lost about 11,000), nothing too consequential or significant really happens to me until the break, so we head into the break and through the end of the registration / re-buy period with 80,500. Although, the last hand of level 8 had a 4-way all in that many players of our table and about 10 players from other tables stopped to watch. Because of the crazy action, it took a few minutes to get all of the counts and side-pots going. After it was all said and done, a pair of pocket Kings held against a lower pocket pair and two other Broadway cards that I can't remember, and off we went to break.
Level 9:
Table #35, in the back row of the poker room, breaks. The dealer runs out an unnecessary high-card (I'm actually not sure why this is done as we're randomly given seat cards...but whatever), and I get moved to Table #28, seat #3. A player whom had bought in later and was at my original table was also moved to this table - I had raised pre-flop in level 8 with a KJo and he called with a raggy-Ace, hitting his Ace on the turn, to which I joked with him that he'll "play any Ace". This does become important later on.
In Level 9, blinds are 500/1,000/1,000 and about halfway into the level, I get into a hand that is my favorite of the tournament and I'm very proud of how I played it. I have about ~80,000, and the action folds around to me in the CO. I look down at Jh8d, and decide to raise it up to 2,500. At this point, I haven't been very active since my meteoric rise to nearly 200BB a few hours prior, and haven't opened a pot yet since being moved to this table, so I specifically went into this hand with a plan of applying pressure to my opponent if I thought that they were not very strong and if the board + player(s) involved favored such a strategy. The BB calls, and the flop comes T76 with two spades with 5,500 in the pot. The BB checks and I lead out 3,000. The BB thinks about it for a bit and calls, so the pot is now 11,500. The turn is a off-suit 5, giving me some additional outs. The BB checks again and I think he is in check-call mode with something like a pair of tens, some Broadway cards (over cards), or some suited-connector hand like 87 (but I do block some combos of 87, 98, or T8 with my J8 holding, and also take away some of what he could call a raise in the BB with - hands like KJ, QJ, or even JT). I think about what bet-sizing I want to use, knowing full well that, at this point, I am going to be triple-barreling no matter the river. I bet 5,500, and again he tank-calls. There is now 22,500 in the pot and the river is the 3s. So now, there is a flush on board and hands like 64 get there as well. The BB once again checks and I lead out for four grey & yellow 5k chips. This was a big, nearly pot-sized bet at this point in the tournament. The BB goes deep into the tank and I can see the pain on his face. I honestly thought he would eventually fold, but after well over 2 minutes of deliberation, he does pull the trigger and tosses out 20,000. I immediately say "Good call, you got it", and he turns over AT for top pair.
He lets out a huge sigh and complements my play, telling me how "polarized" my river bet was and he got very lucky in how we played the hand, that he almost nearly folded, etc.. While his compliments on my play were nice as the other players were hearing his comments, his hero call cuts my stack in roughly half, lower than the tournament average.
I definitely give the player a lot of credit for making the call - a call I did not think he was capable of making under the circumstances. Winning that pot would have put me up to over 100,000, which would have been very nice and on a good pace to make it to Day 2 with a nice stack. Unfortunately, I am now below average and the blinds are once again going up soon. However, I am very proud of the way I played this hand. In the past, I would have never considered anything other than a check/fold or possibly checking it down to see a cheap run-out. But I've been working on my game and am continuing to improve, finding spots just like these to put opponents to high levels of stress and decision-making. In the long run, I should continue to find these bluff spots as I do believe that they will work more times than not, in key situations against players likely to fold to high-pressure spots.
Level 10:
Blinds are now 500/1,500/1,500 and I'm roughly at ~35,000 chips at this point, when the player that "Plays any Ace" from my previous table raises it to 3,000 from UTG, with about ~10,000 left behind. The LJ (Low-Jack) calls and the action folds to me in the SB. I look down at AKo, and with my 25BB-ish stack, I have one and only one viable option - I shove. The player snap calls and almost flips his hand over, until he realizes that the LJ is still in the hand. He thinks about coming along for the ride, but ultimately decides to let it go. The Any-Ace aficionado flips up AJ, and is dominated. The board run out is very nice for me, as the dealer reveals the other two aces left in the deck and I knock out the player and build my stack back up to over 50,000. I start talking to the player on my left who is a nice younger guy with noise-cancelling headphones on, and we start talking about the tournament structure, that we're both going to make a comeback in this event, and other poker-related hopes and dreams.
The remaining tables are being broken, player stacks are getting much larger than mine, and we're now down to 4 tables in this flight. I'm once again in the SB, and the player in the CO who was recently moved to our table makes it 4,500 to go. I don't have any specific reads on this player and have never seen him before. The action folds around to me and I look down at AQ. I really want to play this hand and am not really in the mood to fold it at this point, given that I was once a monster stack in this tournament and I'm now trying to hang on and survive. I definitely don't want to call, even if I do decide to lay it down, so I'm left with two viable options: Fold, or Raise. In regards to a raise here, I also think my options are quite limited to a shove. I have exactly 52,500, so if I do three-bet, I can't really make a min-raise to something like 9,000 as I'll be out of position for the entire hand. So I start thinking about what amount to three-bet with in this spot, and I'm thinking that a bet of 16,000-17,000 might be good. The problem is then that I'll have like 35,000 left, which will really put me in a tough spot the rest of the way if I don't connect with this upcoming flop. I ultimately decide that if I shove, I can double-up if I get called and win, or I can take the pot down right here and be up to ~60,000. So I do decide to shove with about 35BB and the player in the CO does make the call with KK. The flop isn't very helpful, and neither is the turn. I'm down to a 3-outer...an Ace from Space as Tony G says...the river card had other plans, though, and it bricks off and I don't win the pot. We count up the chips and amazingly, we had the exact same chip stack at exactly 52,500. That actually made me laugh. I wished the table "GL", and that was that.
Due to family commitments and the fact that I do want to spend time with my wife and kids whenever possible, I am not able to play in any of other two Day 1 flights, so my Seminole Hard Rock June Big Stack Special is over and I'm off to the next one.
Final Thoughts / Up Next:
Obviously, I'm disappointed that I was not able to survive to Day 2. Looking back, I think I could have folded that AQ hand that I busted with and found a better spot - hopefully in a later position - to reclaim some lost chips. So for future tournaments I'll definitely want to try to avoid playing for stacks and out-of-position with hands exactly like AQ or lower pocket pairs, given that my opponent could have woken up with a big hand, which happened exactly as described.
However, I do think I played well overall, met a lot of nice people and had a great time. I'm also looking forward to having all of the regular tournament grinders back in town after the summer, as I'll be able to do some good name-dropping in future posts :)
Looking at the upcoming schedule, there's a really interesting Seminole Turnpike Series event, a $250 buy-in, $250,000 guaranteed, multi-day tournament where players can qualify at either the Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood or the Seminole Coconut Creek Casino, as Day 1 flights will run simultaneously at both properties. Day 2 of this event will be at the Hard Rock (probably due to logistics - Coconut Creek's Poker Room can't handle the volume, unless they were to bring in tables and use the pavilion like they did for the WSOP-C series back in February.
There's also the Florida State Poker Championship event at the end of July at the Isle, in Pompano Beach, FL. I really hope to be able to play in the Main Event of that tournament, with a $300,000 guarantee and, I believe, a Day 3 final table (I've made Day 2's in tournaments but never a Day 3 - so that alone would be really cool).
Final Results:
Entered For: $130 (1 Bullet)Position: ~35th of 153 on Day 1ENet: -$130
TL;DR: Played in the event described above where, after running like Robert Varkonyi in the 2002 WSOP ME Final Table, I ultimately busted in Level 10 of Day 1E.
Edit: Fixed a couple of things.

Several Vegas trips under my belt

So I wanted to post this not for anything other than for more information for those who come to this sub here for exactly that. Some of this may be repetitive but it can’t hurt to have additional opinions.
Hotels: To clarify, I have always been comp’d rooms due to my play, so I can’t speak specifically to prices, just to what I see.
-Rio: Stayed here. It was huge. Off the strip so was a bit inconvenient but affordable, and now with ubelyft, it may not be a bad option. They have a Seafood buffet which is solid, but wouldn't say "top notch." One very cool thing for poker players, is if you go in the summer, from about May to end of July, you are bound to see some of the top poker players in the world, as the WSOP is there.
-Paris: Stayed here. Hotel is nice. That’s really the best word to describe it, because the rooms are average, clean, pretty standard size. Casino is pretty spacious, cool theme obviously. Always seems like day time even in the late hours of the night. Pizza place there was not great. Buffet there is decent. A lot of different than most others, as they make fresh Crepes and have a French theme, again, obviously.
-Casesars: Stayed here. This is THE largest hotel in Vegas. I believe the Bellagio and like 2 other casinos can fit (square foot wise) inside in this hotel. Mainly because of how large the shops are. The rooms are very nice. Fairly standard for the most part, can’t hurt to ask for an upgrade here. It is a very busy hotel/casino, but is so spread out. Sports book is enormous! If sports are your thing, go here to hang. Sit at the bar right there and play some video poker even. They have a decent café/ eatery area for like quick food, which includes your standard Chinese food, burger place, pizza place, etc. HIGHLY RECOMMEND – Searsucker Restaurant. I believe 430-6 is their happy hour. My fiancé and I went there and we ate very well with an app, and drinks and was like 50 bucks. Get duck fat fries!
-Linq: Stayed here. Probably my favorite place to stay, in many ways. This won’t be the most luxurious place, however the rooms are “different and modern. The hotel is smaller, the casino is smaller but it’s really not a big deal. Just like Caesars and Bellagio, this is pretty much the center of the strip and in the center of it all. Behind the linq is the “High Roller” wheel ride. Leading to the ride, is a walkway and alley of shops and places to eat and drink. All are very good. Highly suggest Flour and Barley for good pizza and beer. Pizza Is brick oven, and suggest the homemade pesto. The beer selection is pretty stellar, for those beer drinkers who like to experience. For the crowd that likes to gamble and party at the same time, O’sheas bar is IN the casino but also leads to the strip. This place is open 24 hours, and has all gambling games inside it (except for slots, although there may be one BIG slot in there). They also have beer pong tables that they provide you with all the stuff. Again, this is highly recommended place to stay, so you aren’t stuck on the end of strip.
-Venetian: Stayed Here. I lied above when I said I never paid for hotels. Staying here I went on Travelocity and got a deal for 5 nights and flight for like $900? I stayed alone because I was traveling for my sister’s wedding. This place is pretty phenomenal. All rooms are suites, technically. Very nice, very big. The Venetian and Pallazo are basically the same place. The rooms are identical and the casino is fairly similar as well. Ate at CUT Steakhouse which was VERY good, clearly very pricy however. All other hotels, I have not stayed at, yet. I don’t think you could go wrong with a hotel, however I would avoid Excalibur, Circus Circus and the Flamingo.

-Criss Angel: Avoid altogether. Show was overpriced and his act is old.
-Penn & Teller: I enjoyed this show. This is at the Rio however, so will need to travel there since you can’t walk there. Show was funny, action packed and of course magical.
-Mat Franco: Good show. Very personal audience as it doesn’t seat many people. It’s got a feel good vibe to it.
-Mac King (Magic): for what you pay, it’s a good show. It won’t break the bank, and there are afternoon shows which is a great way to beat the heat and relax and enjoy some magic and slapstick comedy. He won’t wow you but definitely make you scratch your head.
-Mariah Carey: Now this was a 30th birthday present for my fiancé and I got great seats. It turned out that we sat right next to her kids, so she came to visit that area frequently which was very cool. She really is a great performer, and as a guy, the show was pretty good. She does a lot of costume changes, and sings a lot of older songs. I have heard from others that the show is good, and is MUCH better than Celine, for what it’s worth.
-Absinthe: This is an absolute MUST SEE. Saw this and it is really hard to describe this show in all honesty. It is a mixture of acrobatics, talents (i.e. juggling, etc.), Raunchy comedy, and just a really good time. Don't see this with parents. This is really a great show, and they change it all the time. i saw this show and explained a few acts to my friend, and he said that is not what he saw, so it really keeps the show electric since the actors/perfomrers are really into new stuff.
Food:
-Hash House (Linq): food was good. Expensive but its shareable. Chicken and waffles are good
-Bellagio Café: I like this place for a good breakfast. It’s little pricy, but not too bad honestly. It’s our favorite breakfast spot so far.
-Guy Fieri’s (Linq): Pretty decent spot. Price is pretty good. One of the best burgers I’ve had. Good brisket nachos too
-Caesars Buffet: Best buffet in my opinion. Great selection, food that is supposed to be hot, is hot.
-Bellagio Buffet: Terrible. Waited forever, was SO expensive. Food was not good honestly.
-Paris buffet: It’s okay. Price is Okay. Seriously is just Okay.
-General comment of casino restaurants: Do your research before going. Check out the menu. Don’t go to one of these places thinking you’re going to get an app, 2 dinners and drinks for under 100 bucks in most cases. The steakhouses in Vegas are some of the best in the country. A tip for saving a few dollars, is don’t eat normal meal times. Eat a later breakfast, eat an earlier dinner. Lunch may not happen, OR eat snacks. You can easily go to walgreens and get a 5 dollar sandwich.
Bruxie: saw a suggestion for this place and they said $5 waffle wednesdays. Yes it's true. they always have a chicken and waffle special for $5 on wednesday. they made us show them the facebook promo or something but wasnt difficult. could probably just open the website on your phone. I really liked the food. i thought the chicken was really good and honestly, for five bucks, quite a steal.
Jaburritos: this was right in the alley of the linq. was okay. a bit pricey for "fast food" type, but i didnt mind it. interesting concept in my opinion. was more of a whim visit.
Gambling:
-All casinos will have fairly expensive table minimums. Expensive meaning, you have to search for 5 dollar blackjack and Craps. Mostly going to be $10 or $15. Slot play is comparable all over. Bellagio has a lot of slots, but you can say the same about Caesars and MGM, etc.
Other:
-Mob Museum: very cool experience. I recommend it. You can take the Deuce (bus) there, and then walk right to Fremont after.
-Pawn Stars: If you are a super fan of the show, then go. Otherwise just avoid. Very small, you won’t see one of the stars of the show, everything is super expensive.
-Fremont: Fun to go to, especially to see history. I don’t recommend eating anywhere here lol. My fiancé did the zip line, she enjoyed it.
-New York New York: I am putting this here, because this place fascinates me. The area that looks like NY streets and such for the shops, is just pretty cool to me. Nathans here is good. I have gone with my father and my future father in law, and they both agree it is very similar to old time Nathans.
I have really mashed up a lot of visits to Vegas here, and definitely leaving out tips and tricks im sure. Let me know if I can answer anything else! Win BIG!
Exotics Racing: Gave my fiance this for her birthday last year. i bought her 5 laps in whatever car she wanted. she chose the Audi R8. She LOVED IT. they were very careful with all buyers, and even offered drifting laps to folks just there to watch. They have a pro drifter from fast in the furious (when i was there at least) that would drift for a few laps. it was a sight to watch. Its a bit pricey, but they run specials here and there. If you are looking to splurge and like cars, then this is for you.

Asal Muasal Permainan Poker

  • “Three as Kind” merupakan kartu tertinggi.

  • AS ( ACE )
  • Shah ( KING )
  • Bibi ( QUEEN )
  • Serbaz ( SOLDIER )
  • And The Couli ( DANCER )
Not Seeing, I have Seen”.

Lahirnya Poker Online

A question about the muck.

:::CONTEXT::::
.
I'm playing in a live tournament at a local casino when Hero v. Villian are the only 2 players to see the river.
Villain is verbally and physically explosive - and earlier in the tournament he lost 80% of his stack when he jammed the turn and was called by a woman had a bad hand but made a better hand on the river. He complained that she was a fish and all the other players in the tournaments are donkeys and he walked out of the poker room as he kicked a cardboard box on the floor. He then returned 5 minutes later still heated and talking crap to the woman who finally told him that he needs to play his own game and she'll play hers.
::::The Situation::::
.
Villain in the SB bets out 1/3 pot and hero in the BB raises 2.5x and Villain tanks for a few minutes before finally calling.
Hero, says "You got it." as he rolls his cards over revealing a bluff with only king high. Villain then tosses his cards face-down into the muck. Then pulls back his chips that he used to call, stacks it motions to the dealer for the rest of the pot.
Hero says, "What are you doing? You don't have a hand, what were your cards? I want to see what you called me with - you don't even have a hand to win the pot now. Why would you muck."
Villain begins shouting saying that because the hero said "You got it." it meant that hero conceded the pot, and that "You got it" meant hero folded.
Hero says, "I can't fold. There was no action for me to be able to to fold. You were calling my bet. Granted I have king high, and if you're calling me, I assume that you have to have a better hand. But that's not the point. I want to see your hand. What did you call me with? How am I supposed to know you didn't hero me with Q high."
Villain screams, "Hero flipped his hand up, he tossed it towards the board, while saying "you got it" meaning it's a mucked hand."
Hero says, "Saying, 'you got it' doesn't mean anything - I can say you got it on every street before I bet, or call your bet. The only thing that I can say that is actually a fold is 'I FOLD.' I have no idea what you had. I'm not mucking my hand ever, you called me so you deserve to see what I had. I'm not the type to muck bluffs anyway. So now, I have my hand face-up, in front of me, you mucked your cards FACE-DOWN. My cards aren't mucked they are right here. You have no hand now, so technically I win the pot."
Villain begins to scream obscenities at the hero and at the whole table as everyone is chiming in with their opinions, which was split. But Mostly siding with the hero. One old man said, "there are times in a cash game when all I can beat is a bluff, and we say, 'you got it' as we throw the chips in to call - that doesn't mean we fold - it means that you most likely have us beat cause we're at the bottom of our range but calling to see anyway."
This was a very significant pot of this MTT. This the final two tables. Hero was top 5 stacks, while villain was bottom 5, and would be shortest if he lost this pot.
Hero asks for the floor to be called over. Floor comes over and everyone is trying to explain what happened. I was able to explain what happened since I asked for the floor, the floor asks the dealer if he knows which cards are his based on the position of the muck, the dealer says yes. Floor asks villain what his cards were, where he says to the table 67 suited. Floor peaks at cards and then flips them up to reveal the 67 suited.
Villain wins the pot. Villain begins yelling at the hero and threatening to fight him.
Hero says, that he's fine with the ruling and just wants to see villains cards, especially since hero flipped his cards up revealing his failed bluff. Hero also says that even if the villain were to throw his cards faceup at the muck, hero wouldn't even have thought twice about it - it's the fact he threw his cards facedown into the muck after hero revealed his hand.
This hand happened at the break, so villain went outside to smoke a cigarette. Hero didn't leave the table, and other people came over to talk about what happened - hero was explaining the situation to dealer and some players when the villain came back. He saw that the hero was "still bitching about it, and to quit being such a fucking pussy or he's going to get his ass beat." That's when the floor said that he's not bitching about it - he was asked about it and he's talking about the situation. Then the villain got into the floors face and received a short one round penalty.
Question: What is the correct ruling on this? Will all floors and TD rule this way?
.
I was under the impression that if the cards hit the muck - the hand is dead. Much like at the WSOP when Aces got mucked preflop when a player was all-in
.
edit: added more context of the situation.

timetosuckit's weekly DEGEN THREADDDD

Well the last degen thread was a hit and although people didn't contribute as much as I was hoping it looks like people were entertained and that is what I'm all about, entertaining you. I have so many degen stories that I can share this seems like as good a place as any to share. So here goes another one:
I'm about 23-24 years old, a MASSIVE donk both in life and in poker. I think I know everything, I've watched enough WPT and WSOP that I feel like the game is easy. The most dangerous thing is that I've gone on enough heaters to actually believe I'm right.
At this point I'm living with my parents and my life roll is about 1k. No job, no savings, no nothing. I've been lying to my parents and telling them I'm job hunting when I've really just been sitting around in the cardroom all day deluding myself into thinking I could go "pro".
I, of course, carry my life roll with me where ever I go. I walk in with my 1k and sit down at $8-$16 Limit hold em. I "grind" for a few hours and run up a $200 buy in to $600.
Liferoll is now at $1600. Well since that is five buy-ins at $3-5 NL its time to play $3-5 NL. I buy in for $300 (life roll $1300) and run that buy in up to $1000. Now, life roll is at $2k.
Time to go sit at $20-$40 Limit. Obviously at this point I'm a pro and I think I can bounce around from limit to no-limit. I had watched poolhall junkies and there is a line in that movie right at the beginning where he says "From the moment I picked up a pool stick I could just play." and thats who I thought I was at poker.
Bankroll Mgmt? don't need that if you have a big enough edge.
Sit down at $20-40 and buy in for $500 (liferoll at $1500) go on a heater and run that up to $1500. Liferoll now at $3k.
yawn this game is too eaasssyy. I don't want to beat up on the donks anymore so I'm going to $5-10 NL. Buy in for $1k (liferoll at 2k).
Guess. what. happens. now. YUPPPPP HEATERRRR Run it up to 4k.
I have now successfully turned my original 1k ino $6,000. I'm a goddamn champ. A fuckin beast to be reckoned with. The 5-10 game at this time is pretty much broken. I'm sittin here playin heads up with another chump. He's been winning cuz he's on a heater, I've been winning cuz I'm god of Poker.
He has about 3300 I have about 4200. I get K 5 on the button I raise. He calls
Flop comes K 8 5
I must've bet first and I bet 60, raise to 160, reraise to 350 and now its villains turn. There are two hearts on the board, he thinks and says "All-in"
Shit.
I tank. I tank and I tank.
Since we were playing heads up, this particular casino didn't care about showing cards or whatever. I'm talking to him, he's talking back. He clearly thinks he's strong because he is talking confident. Does he have a set? Flush draw? He is a Crazy Asian could have a flush draw. Bluff? Some crazy bluff where he dug himself in too deep and can't get out??
Shit.
I turn over my cards and look at his face. He doesn't say anything. He's gone silent. Why the fuck did he go silent.
I start looking at my stack and I think, shit if I win this what a run, so sick. If I lose then its me being a degen all over again. Why didn't I leave when I won 3k? I wouldn't be in this position right now. I really don't want to risk my whole stack. Even if he has a flush draw he can suck out on me.
I say "ok fine, i'm folding but you have to show me."
I muck, and he flips over 8 5. Bottom two pair. FUCKKKKKKKKKK. Why the fuckin shit goddamn didn't I call, I'm such a bitch, what is wrong with me, that was a 3k pot, you could've been so up right now, omg not even funny.
Yea...I went on monkey tilt. I started playing hyper aggressive to get all the money back and after I lose about another $600 he picks up and leaves.
What an asshole, won't even give me a chance to win it back. That's ok the casino has plenty of money. Time to go play Blackjack and get this shit back.
I start playing $100 a hand on 3 boxes, lose 5 hands in a row.
Then I play 300 a box on 3 boxes. First hand was a double down so I double my 11 and get a 3. FUCK
Next hand is split with Aces, split them and get a 4 and a 5. FUCK
Last one is a 10, double down again, get a 4.
That's ok save the big ones for the dealer! Dealer is showing a 5, turns over a 6 and spikes a fucking KING.
fuck my life. By the time the night was over, I walked out of the casino with $35.00 to my name. Had breakfast, filled up gas and was dead fuckin broke.

new poker reg looking for advice (live 1/3, St. Louis)

Hi /poker,
I'm a new live player that wants to take a shot at making some decent $ at the casino. I've played for small change previously, and had a pretty decent run on the WSOP poker app. (I know it's play money, but when you get to the higher stakes alot of the players become somewhat decent)
I've done two dozen sessions with 1/3 NLHM at a nearby casino (Lumiere in St. Louis) for a few months and have found it to be challenging. I have a couple questions for you guys if you don't mind me asking.

1 - If I choose to play a connectobroadway hand offsuit, are the suits important to memorize?

I say this because unless I have a A or a K, I find the information to be hardly useful. (one less flush card out for a villian, but they don't know that?)

2 - Has your session length endurance improved?

I've noticed after about ~3 hours during a session my play starts to get weaker. Over time have you all been able to improve to longer sessions gradually or have you been stuck at the same session length throughout your poker careers?

3 - When you have TPTK on the flop against a few villains, which is the better +EV long term play and why:

4 - How should mucked cards that are revealed factor into my calculation?

I understand that this can affect outs to:
But what if it is none of the above? Can this act as a positive multiplier for the outs I have already? (ie. if 3 cards are accidentally revealed, multiply your outs by x1.25) Maybe this is so insignificant that it's not worth the hassle.

5 - Drawing with middle or bottom pair on the flop? (no flush or straight added)

The pot odds are terrible, but are the implied odds worth it if the villain is deep stacked? I ask this because I have seen some solid regs (that I'm 90% sure are using poker as a full-time income) use this strategy to take another player's stack with two pair or land trips successfully.

6 - Best bluff strategy for 1/3?

I've found that bluffing 3 streets almost never pays off, even when I have a tight table image. Thus I've dropped my bluff frequency to 1 street, and maybe 2 streets occasionally. Usually I look for scare cards (flush draw, overcard appeared, etc.) for a quick takedown of the pot. I realize bluffing is situation and player dependent moreso than having x% of a bluff range that others like to promote. Am I wrong in thinking this?

7 - Suited connectors in a large multiway pot perform badly?

According to online sources, suited connectors are great for multiway action, but a recent post here - Live 2/3 NLHE - J9s has me second guessing using them in a multiway pot. Should I be looking to only land the straight or two pair with them? Maybe only play small pocket pair for a set or a nutted A/K high flush? I'm unsure now...

8 - How much of a flush range is eliminated when on a flush draw board the suited Ace or King hits the flop?

Assuming most villains play Ax's and Kx's and suited connectors. This would narrow down the flush range by ~1/3 or 1/5? Assuming they play AKs-AJs and KQs-KJs aggressively? How should this affect my decisions when I see a flush draw on the board? What kind of equity calculations should I be doing?

9 - Lastly, what kind of resources do most of you live players use? Flopzilla, Combonator, Equity Lab?

Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope to be a contributing member to this community in the future! :)

Robert Notkin wins PokerStars Canada Cup

One of the most important poker tournaments hosted on Canadian soil goes by the name of PokerStars Canada Cup. It was scheduled just a couple of days before the World Series of Poker 2014 began and Robert Notkin was the player to win it all. He found no reason to forsake this opportunity just to be among those who buy in for the first side events of the Las Vegas series and his decision proved correct. As a result of outlasting all his competitors, Robert claimed a prize of $366,660 and increased his initial investment more than 100 times. With so much cash won just a few days before the WSOP, he can participate in virtually all side events, without even worrying about money. It took him a full five days to outshine 578 participants, but Notkin was well prepared to survive such a marathon. Most of those who participated in this competition bought in and had no problem in paying $3300, but Robert found an alternate way. This is the one preferred by those who have an account with PokerStars and don't mind playing satellites for as little as $30. Obviously, he went to a string of qualifying events, before booking a seat for the main event but the time spent at the online tables was well worth it. Once he made the final table, he took full advantage of his vast experience in online poker and won a remarkable pot in the last hand of the tournament. Observers were expecting the tournament to last for an another hour so, as for players were still in the hand but Robert Notkin was dealt pocket Kings and he moved for the kill. Interesting enough for his competitors were willing to commit their entire stacks with decently strong hands, but all of them started as underdogs to his Kings. What usually happens when you go all in with four players is that one of the other players improves his hand, but this was not the case as the pair held all the way to the river. The three players were eliminated in one swift blow and Robert was left to savor his win and the six digit amount. This is what the other players got for their effort and it is only fair to say that they were generously rewarded. 1. Robert Notkin $366,6602. Vincent Jacques $257,2803. Ryan Rivers $165,2804. Justin Miller $122,4105. Rayan Chamas $91,7606. Ankush Mandavia $73,5207. Thiago Nishijima $61,3008. Francois Goulet $48,8809. James Armstrong $36,660

Mukul Pahuja overcomes adversity to win WSOP trophy

The World Series of Poker Circuit Main Event at Palm Beach Kennel Club in Florida brought together many of the players who were hungry for land-based competition. They've got plenty of choices if they go over the Internet with the tournaments running live at Unibet poker keeping them at the edge of their seats. There are plenty of advantages associated to online gambling, but there are many who think that only a live poker game can capture the very essence of this beautiful sport. Among those who participate in this tournament that made a deep run it is worth mentioning Jonathan Hilton, Maurice Hawkins, Russ Head and Tony Ruberto. The last was actually the most successful of all of them as he finished in the 10th Pl., even though this was not enough for him to make the final table. In the WSOP tournaments the final table consists of nine players, so he finished just short of that. At the same time, Juan Mendoza and Weinman were battling at the bottom of this list and decided not to take any chances with their tiny stacks. $5000 was the difference between the player who finish in the eighth place and the one who came in the night, so it was worth fighting for. At the same time, players who had more chips in front of them tried to make the most of this advantage and improve their chances of winning the tournament. Mukul Pahuja was among them and he pushed short stackers into a corner, by forcing them to react to his aggressive place all the time. Eventually, he went all in with a pair of jacks against Dalton Mills and he got lucky because he managed to beat a pair of Kings when a fortunate jack appeared on the flop. From this point onward he only went upward and kept playing aggressive poker to consolidate his stack. As the field was limited to just three players, they chose to discuss the terms of a deal but no agreement was reached so competition resumes promptly. Two players from Florida were well positioned to win it and eventually they managed to send Eric Bunch to the rail in the third-place. Adam Levy, Tristan Wade, and Daniel Weinman were regarded as the main favorites to win the tournament but they were eliminated one by one, with at them being the last to be sent home. Mukul Pahuja emerge victorious and for his performance he won almost $200,000, while the next players collected the amounts listed below: 1 Mukul Pahuja Coconut Creek, FL $193,0952 Adam Levy Coral Springs, FL $119,4343 Eric Bunch Skiatook, OK $87,3344 Dalton Mills Jacksonville, FL $64,8065 Joshua Lowing Pensacola, FL $48,7616 Staffan Lind Vero Beach, FL $37,1947 Tristan Wade Boynton Beach, FL $28,7628 Daniel Weinman Atlanta, GA $22,5469 Juan Mendoza Wilmington, NC $17,912

Trip Report: Horseshoe Casino Council Bluffs, Iowa (Part 2)

Night 2
The second day was where things got a little more interesting. I woke up early and around 11 my parents and I got ready to leave to go home. When we got out into the parking lot to get into my dad’s truck someone had broken into it. They had used some type of tool to pop out the driver side lock. Inside the ignition and stuff under the steering column was stripped like they had tried to use something to start it and steal it. It seemed like for some reason they couldn’t get it started and just got scared and bounced. They left in such a hurry that the driver side door was even halfway open. The driver side door was halfway open and no one from the casino or hotel notified us of anything before 11am. Thankfully we had taken all the important and expensive stuff up to the room, so they didn’t get any of that. So we called the cops and they came to file a report. The cop told us that this is really frequent in that area, and had already happened multiple times at that casino in that exact lot this year. My dad has a pretty big truck: F-250, big lift, big tires, etc. The cop said this is almost exclusively what these people target because they chop them up and sell them, I guess? Anyway, my dad was pretty pissed that a casino this big didn’t have good enough security to prevent this (especially since it happens regularly in the area) or even fucking notify him that his door was wide open all morning.
So after getting the truck to the mechanic to get fixed my parents talked to the casino and hotel. The hotel (it was a Hilton I think) was awesome. They comped us a room for as long as we needed it to get the truck fixed as well as had their shuttle drive my dad to and from the mechanic twice. I don’t think we could really have asked for the hotel to be more awesome in terms of making it up to us. The casino on the other hand wasn’t so awesome. The person that my parents talked to that filed the incident report was kind of a dick. My mom asked for some comps to get food because we didn’t have any way to go get food (other than order room service or a pizza or something) and they refused, even though this happened on their property. My mom thought that was bullshit so she called their corporate office and they said they would get back to her. They didn’t call her back after like 4 hours so she called again and then they told her they weren’t going to be giving her any comps for food. She told them that was pretty ridiculous and essentially said she would have no problem blasting them on every social media and review site she could because of this. They essentially said, “whatever, we don’t care.” This seems really stupid to me from a business stand point considering it would have been max like $30-$40 worth of comps and she would have been happy. Another thing that was bullshit is the cop asked for the security footage from the parking lot (the lot has an ass ton of cameras) and the security guy pretty much says, “Oh yeah those cameras aren’t working, sorry.” Overall, my parents were pretty pissed about the whole situation and I think it kind of soured my dad on the whole casino/gambling thing. I couldn’t be happier with how nice the hotel was, but the casino sucked and most of the employees (other than poker room employees) who we encountered were assholes.
Part 3: Karma
Since we were stuck there for another night we figured fuck it we might as well gamble a little more. So we went down to the casino later that night. My mom decided to go off and do her own thing on the slots and instead of going instantly to the poker room I decided to stay with my dad for a while since I felt bad about ignoring him the night before. He had never played blackjack before so we sat down at a $5 table. I figured I’d have a few beers and play blackjack with him for a while and relax. We both went on the most ridiculous heater. He ended up like +$140 after an hour and I ended up $+250ish after the same amount. They had this side bet where you get odds on your two cards plus the dealers up card. It pays different amounts for 3 card straight, trips, 3 card flush, and 3 card straight flush. I think I bet that side bet 8 times and hit it 6. It was ridiculous.
So after we got done playing blackjack my dad said he wanted to try roulette because he had always been curious about that. Went to one of the tables and also went on a sick heater. We both ended up hitting straight numbers like 6 or 7 times each in a half hour span and both left up over $200. At this point he wanted to pocket all the money and him and my mom wanted to go back to the room. I decided to take some of my nice degen table game profits and go play 1/3 for a while. I did really well and ended at something like +$900. Here are a few fun hands from that session:
I’m in the BB with Ts6d. Effective stacks are semi-deep at something like $550. There’s like 5 limpers and the flop comes TcTh6c. I check. One MP limper fires $10 into $15ish. A ridiculous aggro young Asian guy (different one than night before) raises to $30 from LP. Folds around to me and I elect to raise to $75. The original better folds. The Asian guy asks how much I have left and I tell him and he 4bets to something like $200. I tank for a little bit and then jam for $350 I have left. Asian snaps. Board runs out Js and 4d. I instantly turn over my hand and he smacks the table and then mucks one card and then flips over a 7? I’m sure he had to have T7 unless he was just spewing with something like 77 or some type of combro draw or a flush draw with a 7?
The next hand was pretty fun. A couple limps and I open to $15 with AsQs from the button. Older guy calls from EP as well as a woman in her later forties from MP. Flop comes 7s7h4h. I bet $33 into $45ish. Old guy calls and woman folds. Turn comes Jc. Check Check. River comes 8h. Old guy just snap bets pot. I saw him do this two previous times with busted draws or air in the last two hours. Other than that I honestly don’t have any other reasoning for hero-ing here other than I’m up a ton and kind of drunk lol. He turns over KcQc and I win. He looks at me and just says, “Well what the hell did you put me on????” I just kind of smiled and said “I don’t know.” I offered to buy him a beer but he told me he, “didn’t want no fucking beer.” Whatever at least I tried.
The last hand of the night I think is the most interesting one of the whole trip, and honestly one of the weirdest hands I’ve seen in a long time. I am not even involved in the hand. This hand involved the super aggro young Asian dude from earlier that doubled me up with T6 and an older super nit wearing a WSOP wrinkled old hat and super dark sunglasses that hasn’t said a word in two hours (not joking.) This old dude seriously hadn’t played a hand in over an hour. Old nit opens to $12 form UTG+1. Crazy Asian calls from the cutoff. Everyone else folds and it’s heads up. Effective stacks are like $400. Flop comes Kc7cJh. Old nit bets $25 and the Asian guy raises to $70 and old nit calls. Turn is 5d. Old guy bets $100 and the Asian calls in position. River is a 4h and the old nit snap jams for the $225ish he has left. He said “All in” almost before the river even peeled. The Asian guy tanks and tanks and finally calls. At this point I’m almost certain he has kings and the Asian is tanking with two pair or a set, that’s how tight this guy’s rep was. Old guy says, “Good call buddy you got me” and turns over Ac5c. The Asian slams his chips in the middle and turns over Qd4d. Most of the people at the table just looked like Ivey when Tilly checks her jacks full in HSP. Except for the old nit who looks like he’s seconds away from moving the table with his erection at having miraculously accidentally turned his bluff into a value bet and the Asian who looks like he wants to murder someone. I have no idea wtf the Asian guy was thinking. He doesn’t even beat a lot of the hands this guy turns into a bluff, that’s even assuming this super nit has any bluffs in his range (which I guess he does). I was surprised at every aspect of that hand and it proves that no matter how much you’ve played, live poker can still be ridiculous. The Asian guy quickly racked up the $80 or so he had left and darted out of the room.
One last thought and one last question:
First question is, does anyone else ever wonder why people’s significant others sit at the table and watch them? In the course of playing those two days I saw three separate guys that had their girlfriends sitting behind them and watching them. They weren’t even actively participating. It wasn’t like the guy was showing the girlfriend his cards and she was kind of playing along. The girlfriends literally just sat there and stared at the game or their phones while their boyfriends/husbands played. I’ve witnessed this a lot when playing live and always wondered about it. Isn’t this extremely boring for the person just sitting there? If my girlfriend is playing slots or blackjack or something I might stand there and watch for 5 minutes but then I’ll eventually go find my own thing to do. I’m not gonna sit there for 4 hours. Just seems weird to me and wondered if anyone else had ever thought about this. I’ve seen it a lot in my time playing live.
Last thing is, I would definitely recommend the poker room. Everything about it was great imo. I would also recommend the Hilton hotel attached to the casino. The room was nice, I think it was affordable, and the customer service was outstanding. The complimentary breakfast was also amazing. I could have maxed on that shit for hours. The casino as a whole though sucked. Their new player promotions blow. Their beers are over-priced. Their food is overpriced. And their customer service is awful.
Those are my main take aways from the trip. If you’ve stuck with reading this this long, I hope you liked it or at least parts of it. I guess now it’s back to no poker for a while now other than the occasional poker visit and YouTube video for a break between studying 8 hours a day. Cheers.

What was it like winning the Big one for one drop? Edit: Also what is Phil Laak like as a roommate? I mean how do I describe what it was like, it was awesome. I wish there a way to go back to have that feeling again. It's the ultimate high that I don't know if I'll ever get back. It's incredible obviously.
Phil Laak is one interesting character...he's great, he's fun, he's always up for hanging out or gambling or whatever.
Did you have 100% of yourself in the 1drop? I did not. I had somewhere between 1% and 99%.
What is your biggest loss in poker? Financially or, you know, body parts etc. Don Cheadle and I played a heads up match where if I lost, I had to do a full blown magic show at his house in a top hat for him and his guests. If I won, he had to come over and cook for me and up to 25 of my guests in a chef's apron. Of course I lost, and now I owe him a magic show.
Seeing as how you seem to enjoy gambling, have you made any trades on the stock market? Yes, I have some money in stocks but I don't make any decisions on what to buy and what to sell. I let experts do it on my behalf and pay them a tilting commission. If I could go back and do the opposite of every stock tip I've ever gotten, I would be much better off financially.
What's your favorite place you've visited and why? Istanbul, Turkey because it's a magical place filled with kind people, really good food, beautiful scenery, and believe it or not some of the best night life I've ever experienced. Also, the fish in Turkey are in a league of their own. ;)
What things would you do differently to learn and improve your game if you could go back in time to mentor yourself when you first were learning the game? If you were starting your poker career today what would you be doing to improve your game? What would you do to acceralate your learning curve? Thank You. I would have definitely learned all of the poker games back in the day and I would have spent much more time at the table versus going out in my 20s. I left a lot of money on the table. But, I have no regrets and life is all about experiences.
I would study a lot off the Internet. I would know the math in and out.
When did you first start playing poker? Why do you enjoy doing it? I started playing poker when I was 19 years old. My roommate at the time played semi-pro and he got me into it.
I guess I enjoy the thrill of the highs and lows.
And the money doesn't hurt.
Craziest memory from living in Vegas? I'll just say that I had a lot of fun in my 20s. Living in Vegas as a single guy for many years were some of the most memorable times of my life. But if you want specifics, I'll have to plead the fifth.
What is a typical day in the life of a Poker professional like? -What kinds of problems do you deal with? – What kinds of decisions do you make? I wake up, work out, spend about 2 hours on emails and other work-related things at my desk, I eat, then I exist.
Everyone has problems, and I deal with them to the best of my abilities. I'm human just like anyone else.
Where does your super positive outlook on life come from? I don't know where it comes from, but at the end of the day, life is the ultimate freeroll. How you live it is your choice and I'd never want to be the guy on my deathbed with any regrets.
What's the hand that you remember the most? (Be it a hand you won or lost, or one of each if you feel like telling both stories). The hand I remember most is AK vs the QQ of Guy Laliberte in the One Drop when I hit the King on the turn. The shift in my life just on that one card is pretty significant. Not just on a monetary level either.
I thought you were great casting the WSOP ME final table. What did you think of it? I thought it was a pretty simple final table. I didn't like my commentary on day 1, but I thought I did well day 2 and day 3.
Do you think delaying the final table to November is a good or bad idea? Yes, I love the delay. I love the build up. It's like foreplay.
What's your favorite thing to eat during a big tournament? During the WSOP I go with All American Dave's food because it's tasty and more importantly healthy. But if I order food, I always try to go Thai. Love me some curry.
If you could hang out with other poker pros Who would it be(Phil Laak excluded) and what would you do(other than play poker)? I would want to hang out with the people who are my friends in the poker world. We would do fun things just like any other group of friends. Burning Man, travel, party, go to a movie, eat, etc.
What car do you drive? And is it as much fun as it seems to troll Hellmuth? I drive a Navigator. Nothing fancy.
Yes, it's really fun to pick on Hellmuth because he's such an easy target.
Do you still perform any magic? If so, what kind of tricks do you like to do? I still do magic for friends and social events. Not as much as I used to, but I still do, and I still love it.
What's your biggest loss or win in a single game? I've had some really bad days and some really good days. I'd rather not share those numbers with the world. My apologies.
What is the most difficult table you've ever sat down to and did you honestly felt that you had an edge? One Drop, the year I won, day 1. Ivey, Seidel, Marchese, Ben Lamb, Nick Schulman among others. I never felt like I had an edge. They're all wizards.
Do you think you'd make a good politician with all the bluffing you do? I think that one of my strongest traits is people, so I do believe I would be a good politician. Give me the White House.
Were there any specific and major steps along the path to being a successful poker player? You have to have multiple set of skills, not just playing poker. You have to be leak-free and have great bankroll management.
Patriots or Buffalo tonight. Who you got? You ever bet on sports? I'm not a big sports better, but if I had to bet, I would bet on the undefeated team.
Would you rather be attacked by a swarm of bees or a swarm of bears? Well bees I could still live, no? With bears I have 0 outs, and I'm always going to go with more than 0 outs.
What's the most expensive toothpaste you've used or seen fellow pros use, and if you have the money, why not spring for luxury toothpaste all the time? That question is a little advanced for me. I don't exactly keep track of other poker pros' toothpaste. I know that Daniel uses vegan toothpaste.
What are your other major passions, other than Poker? I really enjoy being healthy. I'm pretty passionate about yoga and I'm huge into Burning Man.
Who do you consider the best poker player today? Toughest player you ever faced? Sexiest player you ever faces? Best and toughest: Brian Rast.
I can't think of the sexiest. Poker isn't really a sexy sport.
Favorite prop bet you've won? Who could take two ambiens and stay up longer, me vs Phil on "I Bet You"
What's your beginning poker tips and do you suggest any poker books? I would suggest just learning off the Internet. There's a lot of great knowledge available.
Hi Antonio huge fan! I totally respect how classy you are at the table. What are your poker goals for 2016 and what poker player do you respect the most? My plans are to play poker...nothing different than '15 or '14. I do want to learn how to play PL Omaha Hi/Low.
Huge fan man. Miss your show with Phil "I bet you". Are you ever going to do another show like that? Was a lot of fun. I'm not in the TV show making business, but if someone comes to us and wants to make a show, we're all for it.
What are the cash games like in China? I don't really know. I went to Macau once but didn't really play.
When amateur players make it far enough in a televised game to start having sponsors on their shirt etc, how exactly does that work? Do the poker sites all just offer him x amount and he picks one? If they know he's going to be on guaranteed air time, especially on ESPN, they offer certain players certain deals.
What's your favorite thing to do in Vegas besides poker? (Keep it clean) Eat. There's some amazing restaurants off the strip that no one knows about.
Have you ever considered trying to live-stream on Twitch before? There are a lot of people who would love to watch. Yes, the idea has crossed my mind, but right now it's not on the top of my priority list.
Favorite overall hotel in Vegas? Favorite casino to play poker in Vegas? Aria and Bellagio are my favorites for both.
Your favourite video game? Back when I played, I loved Super Mario Kart.

Hey Naka, I'm a huge fan. Thank you so much for doing this. How much does it actually matter which opening a player chooses? Openings matter only in so much as you are not worse or losing out of the opening!
I've always wondered, does a gm have to have a bajillion games mostly memorized? How big a part of your study is analyzing the games of others? Do you spend time analyzing the games of people worse than you or only of other super gms? In a game of high level chess, does aesthetic count more than a computer-good position sometimes? Like, would you rather have a slightly worse position but one that more suits your style than your opponent's? Various databases that I've seen show that d4 is a more successful opening than e4 but e4 is more popular. Why is this? Why do master players online play so much blitz? Why not lengthy games? Who are your favorite players throughout history and who do you think are the best players? Thanks again. Good luck in chess! I for one do not have a quadrillion games memorized. Mainly, it is more a matter of ideas/concepts combined with an understand of piece play and then of course tactics. But, because all professionals have studied and played chess for so many years, it is just inherently a part of our understanding. In this day and age, everyone is so good that being even slightly worse is too much! I will always take equality! I think in general, when you play chess on the internet its not serious competition, so the goal is to have a good time. Secondly, if I tried playing long games on the internet, I'd have trouble being motivated or keeping up the intensity.
Are there still aspects of chess that humans do better at than computers? How incredible does a computer have to be to beat the best humans? Could my Macbook or cell phone do it? If a computer disagrees with you, do you always think that the computer must be right? How do you think Fischer would do against top players like yourself, Carlsen, or Kasparov? How would Morphy do? What's your top goal in chess? Do you think you'll achieve it? 1.e4 is certainly NOT more popular at the top levels of chess today! I think in general because many of the great champions (Fischer and Kasparov specifically) opened with 1.e4, it remains very popular at the amateur level. The only two aspects of chess which humans are better at are: blocked positions where only one side has a break due to the long term concept and ideas which are beyond a computer horizon and secondly, pure attacks like in the Kings Indian. I am not sure if a computer on a cell phone could beat the top humans, but any laptop would be more than sufficient to trounce us pitiful humans into oblivion! Fischer would almost certainly lose to all of us, but this is due to the fact that the game has so fundamentally changed. If Fischer had a few years to use computers, I think he would probably be on the same level. I certainly hope to become World Champion, but it is a long process and I simply need to play good chess for now!
My favourite players are Kasparov, Fischer and Tal. Mainly because they were more tactical and aggressive which is how I tend to play.
When you visualize a chess position, such as during a blindfold game, or when going over a score without a board present, what do you see? Do you see a full board and pieces, just like you were actually looking at a real board, or do you have some kind of abstract representation in your mind (such as a list of pieces and key squares and their attack/defense relationships)? When I play 1 blindfold game or any amount, (I have done 15 on two separate occasions) I essentially see the whole board, but I very rarely calculate deep lines beyond 2-3 moves. In tournaments such as the Amber Blindfold and Rapid where it is 1 game against another top level play, I very often will calculate 2-3 lines of about 5-6 moves. I wish I could say that I am some sort of mathematical genius and I see a bunch of right triangles or some picasso style art lines, but that would be going too far! When I see the board, it is usually the blue board from the chess program chessbase with the white and black pieces. I suspect that for most modern day players, blindfold chess is a lot easier because of the endless hours we have all spent studying chess on computer screens.
On chess.com, there is a mysterious GM Phoenix who has a very high rating, with much speculation as to his identity. The main guess was that it was you. When you officially showed up on chess.com, Phoenix stopped showing up, furthering that speculation. Were you GM Phoenix? I will take the 5th on your question about GMPhoenix! :)
We played in Round 3 of the 1997 Super Nationals chess tournament in Knoxville. We were both 2-0 and played on the podium while your dad took pictures from below-you were white and played the scotch. You had this intimidating strategy of standing behind me while I was pondering my next move. I still wonder, were you just trying to see the board from a different perspective, or intentionally trying to psych me out?! :) I highly doubt that I could have come up with such a strategy at 9! :) I wish I could remember, but asking me to remember a game from 17?? years ago is too much!
Do you think there will ever be a time in the future when Chess960 is a serious competitive chess format? Do you feel it does a good job of shaking up the theory-heavy metagame for more "casual" observers? Great question, apetresc!
I think chess960 is great as it is simply pure intuition and understanding without theory or computers. In my opinion, a lot depends on the trends. For example, at the moment everyone is playing the Berlin Defense which has severely reduced the number of games with 1.e4 If this trend of attempting to "kill" the excitement continues, it is hard to believe 960 won't take over at some point. However, if we start seeing a lot of deep preparation and exciting games in in the Najdorf or Dragon, then I think the scope of normal chess will continue for a very long time.
Hey, I was wondering how big of a role computers play in your chess life. Hello Jack, your question is very pertinent not only to my chess career but the very future of chess as well. I would say that nowadays, when I study, computers comprise 90% overall.
Do you ever play against them as practice? I do not play against computers anymore because it is severely depressing to lose every game without ever even having a chance!
What do you think we can learn from computer chess and what can't we? I think mainly what can be learned from computers is a deeper understanding that almost all positions are ok with accurate play. In the past, many people assumed certain positions were automatically bad, but computers have shown that the rules and thought processes aren't always accurate!
So when do you decide a position is gone as in unplayable? A full minor down or just a lack of counterplay and a pawn or something? Thanks. In general, one gives up when either they are down too much material, mate is imminent or if there is little to no counterplay. If there is a chance of a swindle or a hope, then there is no reason to resign. Play till there are no chances left!
How often does the average top-ten chess player get laid? We aren't rock stars! :-D.
Is chess still fun, or does it just feel like a job now? Chess is certainly still enjoyable but it has taken on a more serious role as it is my full time career. It will always be fun, but it will never be the same as when I was 12-13-14 years old and just playing the game without any worries in the world.
Why do you play chess? I play chess because it pays the bills! ;) However, more importantly, I play because I enjoy the game! It is also really special having the opportunity to see lots of new and different cities and countries around the world!
How much does being a professional chess player pay? Being a professional chessplayer is not an easy profession, as you need to be in the top 30 to make a good living. Fortunately, I am amongst the top 30!
Who do you support for FIDE president? I do not particularly support one side over the other as both candidates have serious flaws. However, one must look at what the incumbent has done over the past 20 years. It does not seem as though chess has fundamentally moved forward in a new direction. At the same time, it remains to be seen whether the opposition leader will be able to bring in money and sponsors which he speaks of in his campaign.
Hello there, very nice to see you doing an AMA. I've been wondering if there are times or any major time in your life that you've found chess to be boring? Also if that has happened what have you done to change this, or have you changed yourself so that you understand it's work and do it despite it being boring to you? Thanks again :) I have tried to avoid being too philosophical, but I think in general, everything becomes boring after a while. Nothing is as fun as it was when you first started playing. The key is to stay motivated and just continue trying to learn more.
You are considered one of the best blitz players in the world, if not the best. You should comment some of your games and post them to YouTube, a la KingcrusheChessexplained/curtains. I would pay to see that! What do you think? To start, I have actually seen a few of Kingcrusher's videos on youtube and they are pretty good! At the moment, I am the #1 rated blitz player in the world, so I am certainly competitive. However, I do believe that because of my focus on becoming a better classical player over the last few years, I have gotten worse at blitz.
Do you think that, with perfect play, chess is a win for white, win for black, or draw? Will we ever be able to mathematically prove this, or find the hypothetical "perfect game of chess"? With perfect play, chess is and always will be a draw! Perhaps we will one day be able to prove the result of chess, but there will need to be a quantum leap in computing technology as well as storage capacity in order for this to be possible. I sincerely hope that this does not happen in my lifetime.
It seems that you are more in control of your emotions currently than has been the case in the past. Is this something you agree with and if so, is it something you consciously work on or do you feel it's something that has come with age? Hello Veritas, and thank you very much for your question which I will try to answer very truthfully! ;)
I'm not sure that I am ever really in control! I would never really say that I worked consciously to become calmer and more mellow, but I think that lifestyle plays a big roll. In my late teens and early 20s, I spent a lot of time out on the west coast (Vancouver in particular) and this really helped a lot. Although, I do think that with every passing year, I become more mellow!
Thank you so much for your response. I'm so happy that you answered. I lived in Vancouver for a couple of years myself. I am looking forward to watching you play your next tournament. Thanks again. You are very welcome! My next tournament will be in Azerbaijan from April 20-30.
I have been wondering about your Japanese heritage. How often do you visit and can you speak Japanese? I was born in Osaka, Japan to a Japanese father and am American mother. However, my parents separated and I moved back to the US when I was 2 years old. After that, I grew up with only English. I did take some Japanese lessons when I was about 10, and also took Japanese 101 during my 1 semester at Dickinson College.
However, at this point my Japanese is pretty mediocre and I wouldn't say I know more than 20 words. Sadly, it's probably my 4th best language :(
I went back to Japan about once every 3 years growing up until I was 18. While I saw my Japan dad, I never had the opportunity to meet my half-siblings.
EDIT: How do you view your fellow Top Ten players in the world relative to the greats of other time periods? I find that it is almost impossible to compare different generations of players. All of us are only as good as we are because of the greats who came before us.
II: When you're watching a super-tournament that you're not participating in (such as the Candidates this year) do you watch it as a fan or do you use it to size up the competition, examine others opening preparation and search for new ideas? As I mentioned above, the cycle for getting to a Candidates tournament, let alone winning it is a very long one and my next chance is 2 years away! Therefore, I can only focus on playing top level tournaments and trying to improve my overall results and game! When I am not competing, I watch the top level tournaments mainly to see what openings are popular and who is coming up with the best ideas.
What is a typical day like for you when you're not playing in a tournament? A typical day for me when I am not playing chess varies, but I will always study a few hours a day, (2-3) watch some of the BBC series, whether it is Frozen Planet, Planet Earth or one of the others, I will read some (I recently finished reading Titan: The Life of John D. Rockefeller by Chernow) and study about 1 hour of Italian! However, when tournaments are happening within the next week or two, I will be studying a lot more chess!
Favorite unorthodox opening? I would have to say that my favourite unorthodox opening has to be 1.b3! If it was good enough for Bent Larsen, then surely it is good enough for me!
I sometimes (just because) play 1.e3 and then follow that up with b3. Is there any particular reason to play b3,Bb2 first? It is chess! Be creative, and have fun! Your question is too deep and nuanced even for me! :)
Are you good at other strategy games, such as RISK or strategy computer games? Does chess translate to other types of strategy like that? The only other board game which I am pretty decent at besides chess is backgammon. As for computer games, I cannot really comment as I was pretty terrible at StarCraft!
What is the most common mistake new chess players make when trying to learn the game? What's a better way to get started on the path to improvement? I think the most common mistake new chess players make it that they are too impatient and want to know everything right away. Everything is a process and you need to not rush! Beyond that, I think just playing as much as you can, studying tactics and essentially trying to take in as much chess as you can, ESPECIALLY if you are young!
Hello Hikaru! Big fan here! In a time where the majority of elite players choose safe and dry positions I really appreciate your aggressive and entertaining style, constantly going for complications. Thanks for the compliment weasl! My general approach/philosophy is that we are all going to die, so might as well try to create some interesting games which will be remember 50-100 years from now!
Is it easy for you to switch off from chess completely, or do you pretty much think about or calculate positions in your head all the time? Unless I am thinking about chess, I find it quite easy to not think about it. For example, after my recent tournament in Zurich, I did not have a single though about chess during my 2 weeks of vacation!
You have been known to play non-mainstream openings at times. Is this mostly a tactic to throw off booked opponents, a trick to force a certain type of position, general curiosity, trolling, or something else? Thank you for the question LastChance!
For the most part, I tend to consider myself a creative person in almost any endeavour I am actively involved in whether its games like chess or tennis, I like to be creative. Therefore, when I play offbeat openings its more because I prefer the pure aspect of just playing moves and seeing fresh new positions. There is certainly a psychological aspect as well since most people tend to frown upon offbeat openings. However, I will always take creativity, new positions and playing the game over studying the Berlin Defense for 6 hours every day! :-D
What's going on in your head when you realize during the game that you are winning? Thank you for the question, ColoradoSheriff!
In general, I try not to think too much about outside factors during the game except for the position on the board. However, it does get difficult not to start wandering off and thinking about the future during especially critical games. Nevertheless, as with any other game or sport, focus focus FOCUS is the key!
– for you personally, what was the most fun tournament you ever participated in, and why? The first question has been asked many times, and there isn't one particular moment which stands out. It is more due to a special significant event. For example, winning the US Championship in 2005 will always be very special as it was my first US Championship! Just as, for example, the Turin Olympiad in 2006 was special since it was both my first Olympiad, and the first time I got a team medal (bronze)!
– do you still play poker? What was the 2011 WSOP experience like and do you plan to enter again someday? I do still play poker occasionally, but due to the ban on internet poker here in the US, it is rather inconvenient to have to drive a few hours to a casino. Therefore, while I still play occasionally, it isn't something which I spend much time.
Thanks so much! Looking forward to watching you shaking up Candidate’s this year! I did not qualify for the Candidate's tournament this year, but thank you for the compliment!
I am sad neither yourself nor Fabiano will be playing in it this year. In general, it seems to me that the entire system needs to be overhauled as you have 4 out of the top 10 players in the world not playing in the Candidates.
Do you often hang out with other professional Chess player's in non-chess contexts? Is there down-time at tournaments where you just socialize with one another? Most of my life has been spent around chess tournaments and chessplayers so it is only natural that many of my friends come from the chess world. However, I do not hang out with other "professional" players. We all are amiable, but at the end of the day it is a competition!
Thank you for the AMA! As a fellow Japanese American, you are one of my biggest inspirations in chess. Here are my questions: - who was the player that you looked up the most when you were a child? - what do you think are the major differences between chess in Japan and in the states? - what are some characteristics (both in and out of the games) that made some legendary chess players in the past (Kasparov, Fischer, etc)that you think made them so difficult to beat at the time? When I was a child, I looked up to Kasparov. He was both the best and most charismatic player as well as having an aggressive and exciting style. I think the main difference between chess in Japan and the US is that in Japan there is the Japanese version of chess (Shogi) which really limits the number of kids who are exposed to chess. This is why there are so few Japanese players, let alone masters.
I think with Kasparov and Fischer it was everything from their personality to their play which was very intimidating.
Will the sunglasses strategy ever return? I would love to wear sunglasses more often, but unfortunately due to concerns (unfortunately justified in this day and age) about cheating, I doubt I will be doing it very often.
I really like your aggressive style and that you play for wins. Elmobob, thanks for the question!
What do you do up in your hotel room after a particularly awful defeat? I usually watch some Breaking Bad!
What is your favorite part about being a Grandmaster? Travelling? Not having a '9 to 5' job? Thanks. My favorite part about being a professional chessplayer (not a Grandmaster as plenty of them do work normal 9-5 jobs) is that I am my own boss and make my own schedule.
What kind of board and pieces do you prefer playing with? Does the degree of simplicity/luxury have any impact on your level of enjoyment? For the most part, I just like a nice wooden board with weighted pieces. However, I have some antique sets which I thoroughly enjoy as well.
Which is the mountain peak you are the most proud of? I have done many day climbs, but I would have to say my two favorites are Sawtooth in the Sierra Nevadas and Black Tusk in Vancouver, British Columbia! Sometime in the future, I will go to Colorado and do a few 14ers! :-D.
Can you give an example of something new you have learned about chess within the last one or two years? Almost every day, I learn something new about chess from looking at old games or studying tactics!
Have you ever thought about producing any content for the community, perhaps live commentating some games on the ICC? I have considered doing content, and I will be doing some commentary on chess.com shortly!
Are you still technically the chess960 champion? What is the future of chess960 do you think? Would you be happy if all tournaments switched to 960? I am still currently the 960 champion, but as to the future who knows! I attempted to answer this question earlier response.
Are you playing in the US Championship this year, since it doesn't overlap with Norway? I have not decided on the US Championship, but I have chosen to play a tournament in Prague instead of Norway.
How high is your level on ChessTempo? Hello Dance,
I have never played chess on ChessTempo, but I will check it out. At the moment, I am playing on chess.com!
Are you familiar with Go at all? Any interest? Yes, see the link below! However, I am a terrible player!
Link to scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net
Who has been the most challenging opponent you've faced? And also who has surprised you the most in a match (someone you predicted wouldn't have a chance but came close/won)? Without a doubt, I am having the most problems with Aronian! I have lost something like 6 games in a row!
@GM Hikaru Nakamura are there any books that you feel after reading helped you improve? Recently, I have really taken a liking to the My Great Predecessors series by Kasparov.
I love Chess and hate it at the same time. What is the fastest game you have ever played? The longest? The fastest game I have ever played is maybe 20 minutes (I can't recall the shortest offhand). My longest game would have to be an 8 1/2 hour game I played with GM Meier in Dortmund back in 2011.
As a world class, how many hours do you focus on chess per week? Describe what the study plan for a GM is like. Like percentage do you work on opening prep, what percentage on going over past games, etc. What books/study plan would you recommend for a class A-B level player? I already gave a general response to a schedule during a week. As for specifics, I think it's probably 80% openings 10% endgames, 10% reviewing your games.
I was thinking that when Deep Blue beat Kasparov the problem was that the board is too small. A supercomputer can numbercrunch an 8 by 8 board. But a human could adapt to a board 100 times bigger more easily. What do you think? (For you it might be too late too change ;) ) There have been many proposed changes to the chess rules, but none of them have worked so far! I think the problem is that its hard to remain pure to the game without changing a major rule. Perhaps you are the person to introduce the new groundbreaking idea!
You're known to get quite emotionally invested in your games. Why is this? Do you feel it helps or hinders your game overall? When one plays a game or has a job, it seems natural to take pride and want to do your absolute best. This is probably why I give everything for the game of chess.
On chess improvement: what would you say is the best advice for amateurs to follow to help them get better? Best advice for amateurs is to try and play as much as you can, but also study your games and try to understand the mistakes and why you made them.
Can you comment on the psychological aspect of the game, and how much mental strength plays a role? It seems as if some players almost use a sort of sorcery to psych out their opponent. Does that aspect exist at the top levels? In terms of the psychological aspect, mental strength is crucial. If you do not have absolute confidence and belief in yourself or are feeling insecure in any way, there tend to be dire consequences on the chess board. This will tend to affect both your calculation and evaluation assessments.
Also, was this factor partially at play in your recent near defeat of Carlsen? Thanks. My recent game against Carlsen had nothing to do with the psychological aspect. I just had a 1 in 100 hallucination.
In most of your interviews I see you wearing a Barca jersey, what do you think their Chances are of winning the champions league this year? I think there chances are reasonable, and it will certainly be exciting. As long as Real Madrid doesn't ever win, I am happy! :)
Hello Hikaru. Thank you for doing this AMA. No problem, any time!
Do you ever get "tired" of chess and what do you do when/if it happens? I certainly have moments where I get sick of chess. Usually when this happens, I take a long break and look or do anything except chess.
Your games and playing styles have always been marked by a reckless, aggressive, attacking style which is usually decisive one way or another. How were you been able to reconcile your attacking instincts with the positional play that is necessary to succeed at a high level? What advice would you give to somebody who is enjoys dynamic, tactical games, but struggles in positional planning? I think the main way to learn is by playing those types of positions. So essentially, I think it is necessary to make a conscious effort to force yourself into those less tactical positions where you need to find different ways of playing instead of just tactics.
Hello, Hikaru. Thanks for the AMA. At the top levels of grandmaster play, how many moves are made that are either prepared, memorized, or from book before you are into unknown territories and playing strictly from the OTB position? I would say on average, someone will introduce a novelty or play a lesser known variation by about move 15. There will almost never be any surprises before move 10.
Howdy, thanks for doing this- I'm a huge fan that tries to follow all of your tournaments. Sheer-Luck, amusing question!
It seems like someone can't play chess for long without observing some unusual people and/or situations. What do you think is the most amusing chess anecdote you've picked up over the years that you'd be willing to share? There are way too many stories which I will save for my book of chess stories in 20 years! Nevertheless, I remember a game from a tournament quite a few years back, where someone got up went to the restroom then came back only to see someone else sitting in their spot having played 3-4 moves. Suffice to say it was a very confusing situation!
Mr. Nakamura, Nice to meet you, thank you for your contributions to the chess world and for doing this AMA. My question: How do you like your olives? Small and black and fleshy or are you the large green juicy type? Have a great day! I love olives! They are especially good with a nice vodka martini!
Here's a tough one. In the past, sometimes your tweets have rubbed some people the wrong way, e.g. after the Olympiad, "A sad fact of team competitions, you're only as strong as your teammates." (I'm paraphrasing.) How do those statements affect your relationship with colleagues and other players? My teammates understood perfectly well that it was not intended at them. It was a simple statement, but sometimes people choose to see extra hidden meaning.
Gata and I will always be the bruisers for Team USA.
You also follow Napoli FC, a football club in the city of Naples, whose manager ideologically believes that the game is similar to chess in the aspect of exerting control from the center. How did you actually end up following the club though, which I believe is not an automatic choice for mainstream followers of the game? Buona sera, aravindreds!
My fiancée is Italian and lives in Naples. Therefore, I have been spending quite a lot of time there in the past year and a half. One day, I hope to meet Rafael Benitez!
What other "board games" do you play? Baccarat? Primarily backgammon. I have never learned enough about games like craps or baccarat.
I've always wondered how the top players treat each other outside of the playing rooms. Do you guys ever grab a beer together or something? From tournament streams it just seems like the relationships between players are purely respectful and professional. I would say that in the past 60s 70s 80s even the 90s, chess was a lot more fun and enjoyable with everyone being good friends. Nowadays, there is quite a bit of separation and we all do our own thing.
